Few years back we heard similar story from Udupi side, within night transfer done giving higher education as reason to people and now one of the prominent place is awarded. Now one more from Mlore, this time even complaint was shared on social media but later got deleted shows how system works to save the person! Sad reality 🤦♂️
First and foremost, molestation, sexual abuse, and rape should never be viewed through a gender-biased lens.
Abuse of a minor boy or girl must never be ignored or minimized, as its invisible scars can leave lasting fear, shame, insecurity, and difficulty trusting others. These wounds may follow them into adulthood, affecting his relationships and emotional well-being. Above all, they may carry a burden that was never his fault. Society often ignores or minimizes sexual abuse, especially when the victims are males or boys.
From childhood, our brain has filed with the teachings that religious institutions are seen as places of God, with priests and religious leaders trusted as symbols of morality and goodness. Yet, despite this faith and trust, abuse can occur within these very walls, hidden behind silence, fear, and misplaced belief.
Religious leaders often preach that we must stand with truth, reject evil, and protect what is right. Also, they remind us that children are our future. But those teachings mean very little if institutions fail to stand with children when they need protection the most.
If a child walks into a place of worship believing it is a place of safety and walks out carrying a wound that no one is willing to acknowledge, then we have failed to child who is our future as well as God, who is omnipresent but does nothing.
Are we creating a safe place to our young people future of our country and community?
Is an administrative action can heal the trauma of the child or undo damage caused by the abuse?
Will this make to stop the abuser using his opportunities to continue his filthy actions?
Future victims might be from his own families, relatives, neighbours or boys who are not aware about his impious actions.
It is the same as a rapist walking out wearing garland and murderer is walking freely with his murder weapon openly.
Silence or cover up or protecting the abuser may create peace, respect, and protect the institution’s reputation, but it can destroy a child’s sense of safety for life.
Unprotected and injustice can lead to the children to carry anger, shame, mistrust, and unresolved trauma into adulthood, struggling to trust their parents, relationships, society, or even themselves.
Some may turn to alcoholic or other destructive ways of coping, while others become emotionally distant or consumed by anger.
A priest, whom we imagined as a replica of Jesus does such tawdry actions and with the same, preaches about justice, truth and standing for the right and raising voice about inhumane actions.
Aren’t we risk losing the trust of an entire generation?
A church, temple, or any place of worship should never become a place where silence is valued more than serving justice.
Protection of children must come before reputation. Silence on a crime should never be taken into consideration.
A courageous and transparent response to wrongdoing by a religious leader can have a powerful impact on the entire community.
Holding a person accountable for abusing a child sends a clear message that no position, reputation, institution, or religious authority is above the safety and dignity of a child.
It will become a lesson to anyone and everyone who believes that their position will be protected from their actions and the consequences.
Church is just a religious but righteous organization which built on the teaching of Jesus Christ.
Well said, Diana. I second your thoughts. I made a Konkani music video on this theme. Initially, I wanted to create a story based on abuse by a religious person. However, I had to withdraw that idea for fear of backlash from our so-called god-fearing community. I had to change the antagonist to a layperson, a story which is also true and happening in society. Sometimes, I feel guilty for not being bold enough to bring out my initial concept about child abuse in religious places.
Dear Christopher Sir, why did you back out from the idea of creating a story? Go ahead. Do we need such ill person as our community leader. Its like “khakiyenth bible, boglek devnsar”. God knows what is right and what is wrong.

There was a classic case where a priest in Mumbai did such thing and they mother complained to the higher authorities and the case went to court!

The local Catholic community has consistently demonstrated a commitment to transparency, as evidenced by the Pastoral Consultations specifically aimed at addressing and preventing abuse.
Sensationalizing these deeply sensitive issues can undermine the systemic reforms, strict vetting, and mandatory POCSO reporting protocols currently being integrated within parishes.
Constructive dialogue must support institutional accountability and legal compliance without alienating the vast majority of clergy and laity working to maintain safe environments.
The trigger for this article is the reports of compalints by many parents against the “bad behaviour” of a parish priest in a local church in Mangalore. The complaint is lodged with the Karnataka Sarkara Makkala Rakshana Nirdeshanalaya by email and the District Child Protection Unit is conducting enquiry under the provisions of POCSO. We should wait for the civic authorties to submit the report and initaite judicial process.

A long awaited and bold write up. Hats off to u Kishoo. We the laity know all these issues but never demonstrated the courage to express our views. The recent example of the laity trying to shield the priests on the pretext that it is a community issue and should be solved within the community is shameful. We cant have two types of laws for commoners n priestly class. Letting the perpetrator off the hook will be a crime and it sets a precedent that priests can get away with all sorts of sexual abuse. This latest incident has come out in the open but there might be many more incidents which might not have come out in the open for many reasons.
Let us address the elephant in the room. Its time that we think in the larger interest n wellbeing of the community. Did anyone spare a thought for those children who suffered sexual abuse the scars of which destroy their lives from within posing professional and personal problems? Who will heal these wounds and provide succor to the victims? We need to address this issue with the seriousness it deserves.
I do agree priests have desires like others. Let them fight for their rights to exclude celibacy as part of their priesthood Instead of playing with the lives of young children. Laity should not view this issue in isolation.

Our nature of over obeying clergy is the real problem behind not highlighting the issues socially. This over obeying has costs us in many ways socially and politically. Issues like child abuse is too much to digest for a society which is trying to defend whatever the priest does in minor issues also. Questioning and asking accountability should be normal in minor financial and other spiritual issues related to church. It is true that some church leaders are unwilling to acknowledge their mistakes and instead try to brush them under the carpet. In such situations, it can feel as though there is no way to obtain justice from them.
If such incidents are happening within church premises, how can we expect youngster to feel safe, trust in church and actively participate int he activities? May youth have already walked away from church due to painful and disturbing experiences they faced during their altar service days. This cannot be simply ignored or dismissed.
I strongly feel that parent have also a great responsibility. When a teenage child comes and speaks something that has frightened, hurt or disturbed listen and believe that their concerns to be taken seriously. Do not silence them or dismiss their words because the person involved is a priest or someone respected int he churches. Wakeup parents. Be the voice of your child. Stand and protect them and strongly condemn any inappropriate or abusive acts, regardless of who is responsible.
I truly appreciate your courage in speaking about such sensitive and important issue. Our children deserve a safe and supportive community. Let us not remain silent out of fear and be cowards, instead lets stand together with compassion and support those who are affected and seek justice through the proper legal channel. Regardless of who is involved or how influential a person may be, allegations of abuse must be taken seriously and those found guilty should face the consequences legally. Our priority must be safety, dignity and future of our children. Silence cannot be an answer. As a community we have a responsibility of protecting our children, support the affected and ensure such incidents are never ignored or covered up.
Its high time we all stand up and come together with the children who have gone through the abuse, they need to be heard supported and treated with dignity. Healing from such trauma can take a very long time. If we do not take a firm stand today, we will have only older generation in the church.
